Paya Lodge~ (RM250/person/4 in a room)

This tiny village is sandwiched between the sea and a lagoon and is fronted by a narrow strip of beach. Only a handful of resorts, restaurants, shops and homes make up the village. In the hillside behind, a clear mountain stream – Paya’s main water source – rushes over granite boulders towards the lagoon.

The coral living in the blue water right off the shore is home to many colourful species of marine life and there are excellent snorkelling spots. The best location is at the northern end of the village, where there is less human disturbance and a small rocky island lays a few metres from the shore.

The village fills up considerably over weekends and public holidays and is popular with Singaporean and Malaysian families.  On a Saturday morning, scores of tourists clad in bright orange lifejackets line up on the jetty, ready for the snorkelling outing that is included in their weekend package.

Behind a row of palm trees on Paya’s northern beach is where you will find the chalets of the Paya Beach Resort. Beautiful views, good facilities and a bay filled with colourful coral make this the perfect setting for your island holiday.

The double volume deluxe chalets are unique on Tioman and the large windows allow the island sunshine to fill the rooms. These chalets are right on the beachfront, while the others are scattered throughout the well-maintained garden. At the back of the resort, some of the smaller standard chalets are built around a lotus-filled pond, which becomes an enchanting reflection of lights when evening falls.

Facilities here include a fully equipped dive centre, one of only two Spas on the island and a good duty-free shop. The restaurant has a wide selection of local Chinese and western dishes and also has barbeque dinners on certain nights.

To end a perfect day in island paradise, order your favourite drink from the beach bar and watch the sun set over the South China Sea.
